Junior High Expectations
Scales Mound 2013-2014
-Each student receives homework passes at the start of each quarter. The purpose of these passes is to assist students who have not completed a homework assignment or cannot find a homework assignment. The pass may be handed in place of the assignment giving the student one extra day to complete it. Once a student is out of homework passes for the quarter, any missing assignment will be given a zero. The passes may not be used on tests or projects.
-Each student will receive five hall passes per quarter. These passes will allow the student to leave the room for a bathroom break, to get a forgotten item from a locker, or a related issue. With three minutes between classes, students do have time for restroom breaks and preparation, so we do not foresee them needing more than are given.
- If a student is absent, s/he will have two days to make up the assignments. This means if a student is absent on Monday, all work will be expected on Wednesday. If a student is absent on Thursday, all work is expected Monday. If a student is absent for additional days, all work will be expected within three days. This means if a student is absent Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday, all work will be expected on Monday. If a student is absent Wednesday & Thursday, all work is expected on the following Tuesday. If a student is gone more than three days and does not foresee getting the work completed in three days, s/he may choose to set up a schedule for returning any missed work.
-In the case of a preplanned absence, please send a note to the office letting them know. Any missed work from that time will be handled in the same manner as absent work as mentioned above. We will no longer require students to get the work in advance and hand it in the following day. However, if your student will be absent for a vacation or similar situation for an extended period, we will make an effort to prepare the work in advance. Just let us know if that is something we need to do.
-Preplanned absence notes from home should be taken to the office in the morning before school so the office can report the absence on the daily attendance.
-Extra credit will not be given on an individual basis. If a student is completing the regular classroom work, there should be no need for extra credit. However, a teacher may decide to give extra credit on occasion or from time to time to the entire class upon his/her discretion.
-Students will have homework most every night. An effort is made to limit homework to not more than one hour per night. If you are finding that time spent on homework is exceeding that amount on a consistent basis, please contact one of the junior high teachers.
-The three junior high core teachers do not typically give weekend homework. If you are concerned about the amount of time being spent on daily homework during the weekend, make contact with a junior high teacher so the situation can be remedied.
-Eligibility reports for co-curricular activities are compiled and mailed out beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Monday mornings for students earning a grade of C- or below in any class. In order to meet this deadline, teachers begin turning in their reports on Fridays. This means that grades issued at the end of the week/Friday are not expected to be included within the eligibility report. These grades would then be reported with the upcoming grades for the following week.
-Cell phones and iPods are allowed before school, at lunch, and after school. Neither are to be used in class without permission/a pass from a teacher.
-Each student was given an assignment notebook at the beginning of the school year. We do our best to encourage students to use it to keep track of assignments, but it is ultimately their responsibility to write down their assignment and use it appropriately.
-Students are not allowed to eat or drink between classes. Students are also encouraged to clean lockers often to avoid storing food or drink for extended periods of time.
-There is typically a study club for students participating in after-school sports. This tends to be determined by the athletic director and coach(es) and the details are shared accordingly.
-Students have several opportunities to earn Junior High Tickets that can be used to purchase items in our Junior High Ticket Store. These tickets can be earned by not using hall and homework passes, earning extra credit on assignments, etc. Tickets can also be used for extra credit on midterm exams and final exams.
